I’m Here to Win Titles": Man City Signs Khusanov

Manchester City has secured the signing of Abdukodir Khusanov. The 20-year-old Uzbek central defender – the first Uzbek player in Premier League history – joins the English champions from RC Lens.

Manchester City is planning for the future of their defense. As announced by the Sky Blues on Monday evening, Abdukodir Khusanov has been signed from RC Lens. The 20-year-old center-back has agreed to a long-term contract running until June 30, 2029.

The contract’s duration alone makes it clear that the reigning English champions, who recently overcame a sporting slump, have high expectations for the young Uzbek international.

Khusanov himself is confident that he has taken the right step in his still-young professional career. In his first interview with the club’s media channels, the right-footer stated: "This is one of the best teams in the world. And I’ve come here to win titles."

What convinced him to sign the lengthy deal? Unsurprisingly, it was not only the chance to play alongside top teammates but also the influence of Pep Guardiola. "The coach is one of the best. That’s why I’m here," Khusanov explained.

Established in Lens – and the First Uzbek in the Premier League

Khusanov joined RC Lens in 2023 at the age of 18 from Energetik-BGU Minsk (Belarus), marking his first stint in a top European league. He quickly became a key player in the strong defensive line of the Ligue 1 club, making 13 appearances this season and 24 in total.

Now, Khusanov is taking the next – and very significant – step. In Manchester, he will face stiff competition in his position, with the likes of Josko Gvardiol and Manuel Akanji in the squad. However, the 20-year-old is likely to learn a great deal from his new teammates.

Khusanov is also aware of the type of football he’ll be adapting to as the first Premier League player from Uzbekistan (a country of over 35 million people). "I’ve watched many Man City games, even when I was young. It’s a unique style," he remarked.
